Barmah-Millewa fish midden project

Project team: Paul Humphries and Tamsin Greenwood (CSU); Lee Joachim, Denise Morgen-Bulled, Damien Morgan-Bulled, Jackie Walker, Greta Morgan, Hilda Stewart, Colin Walker and Caring for Country Rangers (Yorta Yorta Nation); Alan Williams (ANU).

This project is a pilot study to establish a reference collection of fish bones from the Murray River, identify candidate middens in the Barmah-Millewa region and to carry out preliminary collection of midden material for identification and description of food eaten by Indigenous people in pre-European times.  It will be the first step in a broader description of pre-European fish assemblages and their significance as food for Indigenous people for the middle and lower Murray River.  The knowledge gained will be used in the conservation and management of the river and its fish and for a greater understanding of pre-European Indigenous diets.
